Sustainability & Community Impact

Komodo National Park is a global treasure, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. At Bali Komodo Package, we view ourselves not as owners of this destination, but as its custodians. We have a profound responsibility to protect its fragile ecosystems and to ensure that the local communities who call this place home are the primary beneficiaries of our tourism activities. Our sustainability policy is not a marketing initiative; it is a core operational principle that guides every decision we make, from choosing our partners to designing our tour itineraries.

Our Three Pillars of Commitment

1. Environmental Conservation: Protecting a Priceless Ecosystem

Our business depends on a healthy marine and terrestrial environment. We are committed to minimizing our footprint and actively contributing to conservation efforts.

  • Strict No-Plastic Policy: We have eliminated single-use plastic water bottles from all our trips. Guests are provided with personal, reusable stainless-steel water flasks, and our vessels are equipped with large, filtered water dispensers for refills. All food is stored in reusable containers, and we use biodegradable cleaning products.
  • Waste Management Protocol: We enforce a strict ‘pack-in, pack-out’ policy on all our vessels. All waste is sorted, securely stored onboard, and properly disposed of at designated facilities in Labuan Bajo. We refuse to work with any boat operator who does not adhere to this.
  • Marine Protection & Education: Our guides, trained in collaboration with marine conservation advisors (see our team), educate all guests on responsible snorkeling and diving practices. This includes maintaining a safe distance from wildlife (especially manta rays and turtles), never touching coral, and using only reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Direct Conservation Funding: We commit 2% of our annual profits to the Komodo Survival Program. This funding directly supports their vital work in dragon monitoring, ranger patrols, and scientific research.
  • Carbon Offsetting: We are actively developing a carbon offset program for 2026, which will allow guests to contribute to reforestation projects in Flores to offset the carbon footprint of their flights and boat travel.

2. Community Empowerment: Ensuring Local Benefits

Sustainable tourism must be inclusive. We are dedicated to creating tangible economic and social benefits for the local communities of Flores and the surrounding islands.

  • Local Employment Priority: Over 85% of our operational team—including boat crew, guides, and drivers—are hired from local communities in and around Labuan Bajo. We invest in their training and professional development, providing opportunities for advancement.
  • Sourcing from Local Businesses: We prioritize purchasing supplies from local markets in Labuan Bajo. From the fresh fish and vegetables for our onboard meals to the hand-woven textiles we offer as guest souvenirs, we ensure the economic benefits of our tours are spread throughout the community.
  • Community Project Support: We partner with the ‘Flores Forward Foundation’ (Yayasan Flores Maju), a local NGO, to support educational initiatives. We currently fund a program that provides English language and hospitality skills training for young adults in Kampung Rinca, empowering them to pursue careers in tourism.
  • Cultural Respect: Our guides facilitate respectful and meaningful interactions between our guests and local communities. We provide briefings on local customs and etiquette to ensure all encounters are positive and dignified.

3. Ethical Operations: A Commitment to Transparency

We believe that true sustainability requires accountability and ethical business practices.

  • Fair Wages & Conditions: All our staff and the crew of our partner vessels are paid fair, living wages that are above the regional minimum. They are covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (social security and employment insurance), as detailed on our Safety & Compliance page.
  • Small Group Sizes: We intentionally keep our group sizes small to minimize social and environmental impact on sensitive sites like the Pink Beach and the trekking paths on Padar Island.
  • Transparent Communication: We are open about our sustainability challenges and our goals for improvement. This policy is a living document, and we welcome feedback from our guests, partners, and the community on how we can do better.

Choosing Bali Komodo Package means choosing a tour that not only delivers an unforgettable experience but also makes a positive contribution to the preservation of one of the most incredible places on Earth.

Environmental stewardship beyond plastics
