A Komodo open trip is a scheduled shared-boat departure where you buy a cabin or a bunk, not the whole vessel. You sail with 8–20 other travellers on a fixed route out of Labuan Bajo, with fixed departure dates and a per-person price. For 2027, indicative bands are roughly IDR 1.0–1.8 million per person for a shared speedboat day trip, IDR 2.5–5 million for a 3D2N sharing-cabin phinisi, and IDR 4.5–9 million for 4D3N depending on boat class. It is the cheapest honest way to see Komodo National Park, and for solo travellers it is usually the only sensible one.
Who will actually be on the boat with you?
An open trip fills with independent travellers: couples, pairs of friends, a few solos, occasionally a small family. Groups are mixed nationality and the working language on board is English. On a mid-class phinisi you are typically 12–20 guests with 8–14 crew; budget boats squeeze 8–16 guests into 4–8 cabins with shared bathrooms; deluxe boats deliberately cap closer to 10–18.
The trade is simple. You give up control of the schedule and gain a price that is a fraction of chartering. If your group is six or more people, run the numbers against a whole-boat comparison before you book seats — the break-even arrives faster than most people expect.
When do open trips depart?
Departure rhythm follows the weather, not the calendar. Komodo’s reliable window is April to November, with the driest, flattest conditions June to September. December to March is rainy season; January and February are usually the wettest and roughest, especially on exposed southern and open-water legs.

A daily visitor quota administered through the national park’s booking system is in force, which means popular dates genuinely close rather than merely getting busy. That is the single strongest argument for booking early rather than turning up in Labuan Bajo and shopping the harbour.

Why cabin position matters more than cabin size
Lower-deck cabins sit closer to the engine and the waterline: warmer, louder, and more motion at anchor in swell. Upper-deck cabins are quieter and better ventilated but cost more. Is a Komodo open trip good for solo travellers?
Yes, and this is where open trips earn their reputation. A solo traveller can buy a single bunk in a sharing cabin at the lowest price point on the whole market. Bunk allocation in mixed dorms is normally arranged same-gender where numbers allow; tell us at booking if that matters to you and we will confirm the configuration in writing before you pay.
If you want a private cabin to yourself on a shared boat, expect a single supplement of roughly 50–80% of the second-person rate. Some boats waive it in low season. On safety: crews on licensed vessels are experienced with solo guests, cabins lock, and there is always a crew member on watch overnight.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum number of guests for the boat to sail?
Most scheduled departures run on a minimum, commonly four to six confirmed guests. If a date falls short we tell you at least several days ahead and offer the nearest alternative departure or a full refund of what you paid us. We do not hold your money hoping the boat fills.
Can I cancel or change my dates?
Terms vary by vessel and season, and they are stated in your booking confirmation rather than buried. As a rule, changes made well outside peak season are easier than changes to a June–September or Christmas departure, where the cabin is genuinely hard to resell.
How much luggage can I bring?
Soft bags only — cabins have no space for hard suitcases, and crews will ask you to store them. Your DPS–LBJ domestic flight is typically limited to 20 kg checked, so pack accordingly. Left luggage can usually be stored in Labuan Bajo for the sailing.
Will the route change?
Sometimes, yes. Tide, wind, ranger slots and park scheduling all move anchorages around. Any competent operator publishes the itinerary as a sample route, and any operator that promises an unchangeable schedule is not being straight with you.
Is an open trip safe?
On a licensed vessel, yes. Enforcement in Komodo waters has tightened: valid seaworthiness certification, lifejackets for every passenger on board, lifebuoys, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, licensed captains and engineers, and enforced capacity and adverse-weather limits. Ask any operator to show you the certificate. We volunteer ours.
Do I need to book the park ticket myself?
No. We handle park bookings and pass the fees through at cost, with the breakdown itemised on your invoice so you can see exactly what went to the park and what went to the boat.
What if I want privacy but not a whole boat?
Buy a deluxe or superior cabin on an open trip. You get the shared-boat price on food, crew and fuel with a private, en-suite room. It is the best value point on the market for couples.
