What are the cabin classes on a Komodo phinisi?

Master suite. The largest cabin on the vessel, normally one per boat, on the upper deck. King bed, private bathroom, the best light and the least motion. On a well-designed phinisi this cabin has its own access to a deck space.

Deluxe. Upper-deck double cabins with windows, en-suite bathrooms and enough floor area to open a suitcase without standing on the bed. This is where most couples end up.

Superior. Main-deck or good lower-deck position, en-suite, comfortable but tighter. The value sweet spot on mid-class boats.

Standard. Compact double or twin, sometimes bunks. En-suite on mid and luxury boats, shared facilities on budget vessels. Lower deck.

Sharing / dorm. Four to six bunks and a shared bathroom. Budget boats only, and honest about it — it is how solo travellers sail Komodo affordably.

Why does deck position matter more than the brochure photo?

A phinisi is not a hotel. The hull sits in the water, the generator runs at night to hold the air-conditioning, and the anchor chain runs out through the bow. That produces a predictable hierarchy that no interior styling can override.

Charter rates normally include the vessel, full crew, all meals, drinking water, snorkelling equipment, tenders and fuel within the core national park route. They normally exclude park entrance and ranger fees (passed through at cost, roughly IDR 300,000–400,000 per foreign visitor per park day), diving, alcohol, and fuel for routes outside the standard area. These bands are market guidelines for 2026–2027; your quoted rate is confirmed against live fleet availability.

Why a two- to three-night minimum?

Because a phinisi has to reposition. Crew provisioning, fuel, ranger slot bookings and the sail out to the anchorages all happen whether you stay one night or three. Below two nights the cost per useful hour on the water becomes indefensible, and reputable operators will say so instead of selling you a bad trip.

What we need to quote a charter

Four things, and we can usually respond the same day: your dates and flexibility, the exact guest count with cabin pairing, whether anyone dives and at what certification level, and any dietary or medical requirements. From there we come back with two or three real vessels, their specifications, the deck plan, the crew list and an itemised price — not a generic brochure.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a private chef on board?

Every phinisi carries a dedicated cook. On deluxe and luxury vessels the galley handles menu personalisation, birthdays and multi-course dinners; on standard boats you get excellent, simpler Indonesian and Western food served buffet style.

Do any boats have a jacuzzi?

Some luxury vessels do, usually on the sun deck. It is a genuine feature, not standard equipment, and we will name the boat rather than imply the whole fleet has one.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Mobile coverage is patchy across the park and disappears entirely on northern routes. A growing number of vessels carry satellite internet, which changes the picture for remote workers — ask us to filter the fleet by connectivity if you need to stay online.

Are park fees included in the charter rate?

Usually not. They are passed through at cost and itemised. Be careful with quotes that look unusually cheap and claim fees are included; some operators file bundled route tickets (around IDR 650,000 for Komodo Island and Padar, roughly IDR 900,000 for Rinca) which is why comparisons get confusing.

Is there a fuel surcharge?

Only if you request a route outside the standard park area — for example a long northern extension or a one-way to another island group. It is quoted upfront, never added afterwards.

What is normal for crew gratuity?

Tipping is discretionary and genuinely appreciated. A common guideline is IDR 150,000–300,000 per guest per day, pooled for the whole crew. There is no expectation and no pressure.

What safety equipment should I insist on?

Valid seaworthiness certification, a lifejacket for every passenger, lifebuoys, working navigation lights, fire extinguishers, a stocked first-aid kit, and emergency oxygen if you are diving. Licensed captain and engineer. Any operator that hesitates when you ask is answering the question.

Can I see the actual boat before paying?

Yes. We send photographs of the specific vessel and cabin, the deck plan and the specification sheet before deposit. If the vessel changes for operational reasons, we tell you and you approve the substitute.
