A private speedboat charter in Komodo buys you time, not distance. A 25–35 knot boat cuts the run to Padar to about 1–1.5 hours instead of the 2–3 hours a phinisi needs, which means a single day can realistically hold three or four stops instead of two. What it does not do is make the park smaller: Gili Lawa is still 2–2.5 hours away and does not belong in a day plan. Whole-boat charter for a day runs roughly IDR 8–15 million (about USD 550–1,050) depending on size and engine count, for a private group of up to 10–15 guests.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A day is about ten usable hours of daylight; every stop consumes 45–90 minutes on the ground or in the water. Four stops plus transit is a full, honest day. Anyone selling you six is selling you a boat ride.
Three route options that work
Route A — the classic: Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, Manta Point
Depart the harbour around 04:15, land at Padar by 05:00, climb the ridge for a 05:30–06:00 sunrise, then Pink Beach for snorkelling and coffee, then the drift over the manta cleaning stations at Karang Makassar, then Kanawa or Taka Makassar on the way home. Back in Labuan Bajo mid-afternoon.
Route B — the relaxed family loop: Rinca, Kelor, Kanawa
A civilised 07:30 start. Ranger-escorted dragon walk on Rinca’s rebuilt elevated walkways — the safest and most reliable dragon viewing in the park — then a short hill walk on Kelor, then a long, shallow snorkel and beach afternoon at Kanawa. Short sailing legs throughout, which matters with children.
Route C — the photographer’s run: Padar, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar
Sunrise on the Padar ridge, then across to Loh Liang for the ranger trek on Komodo Island itself, then the sandbank at Taka Makassar timed to low tide for the aerial-style shot. This is the longest of the three and needs a fast, well-powered boat.

Rates cover the whole boat, crew, skipper, fuel on the agreed route, lunch, drinking water and snorkelling gear. Excluded: national park entrance and ranger fees, which for foreign visitors land at roughly IDR 300,000–400,000 per person for the day once entrance, ranger, harbour and conservation components are added. Some operators file a bundled route ticket (around IDR 650,000 for the Komodo Island and Padar route, roughly IDR 900,000 for Rinca) instead — ask which applies to your itinerary so you can compare quotes honestly. All figures are guidelines, confirmed at booking.
Who should charter a speedboat instead of sailing?
Good fit: travellers with only one free day in Flores; families with small children who cannot face a night on a boat; guests who suffer badly from seasickness and want the option to be back on land within 90 minutes; photographers chasing a specific light window; anyone who wants to choose the departure time rather than inherit it.
Poor fit: anyone who wants northern Komodo or Gili Lawa; divers, since a day charter cannot deliver the site rotation a liveaboard can — see the dive liveaboard package; and travellers hoping for the anchorage evenings, which are quietly the best part of a Komodo trip.
Safety on a fast boat
Enforcement in Komodo waters has tightened considerably, and a legitimate speedboat operation carries valid seaworthiness certification, a lifejacket for every passenger including child sizes, lifebuoys, navigation lights, a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit, with a licensed skipper. Capacity limits and adverse-weather departure rules are enforced. If the harbourmaster stands the fleet down, we do not sail — we reschedule or refund. On a small fast hull in short chop, that judgement matters more than any other feature you can buy.
Frequently asked questions
What time do we leave for a Padar sunrise?
Around 04:15 from the harbour, landing 05:00, on the ridge before 05:30. Local sunrise (WITA) falls roughly between 05:30 and 06:00 depending on the month. Yes, it is early. It is also the reason people come.
Is there a toilet on board?
On mid and large speedboats, yes. Small open speedboats often have none, which is worth knowing before a two-hour leg. We will tell you which boat you are on.
Is there shade?
Cabin and canopy boats have proper shade; open hulls have a bimini at best. Between 10:00 and 15:00 in Komodo this is not a comfort question, it is a sunburn question. Bring a hat, a long-sleeve rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen.
What happens in rough seas?
Speedboats are more weather-sensitive than phinisi. In December–March, and on any day with strong wind against tide, the skipper may reroute to sheltered northern and central sites or postpone. You will be offered an alternative date or a refund of the boat portion.
Can young children come?
Yes, on the calmer routes and with child-sized lifejackets, which we specify at booking. For a small child, Route B is the right answer — short legs, shallow water, a real dragon sighting from a safe walkway. More detail on our family Komodo package.
Can we customise the route?
That is the entire point of a private charter. Tell us your priorities and we will build the day around them, then tell you plainly if the timing does not work rather than letting you find out at sea.
How does this compare to a shared day trip?
A shared speedboat day trip costs roughly IDR 1.0–1.8 million per person. Private charter makes sense from about six or seven people, or earlier if departure time and privacy matter to you. Compare with our day trip packages.
Do we still need a guide?
Yes on the dragon trails — ranger escort is compulsory at both Loh Liang on Komodo Island and Loh Buaya on Rinca, and walking unaccompanied is prohibited. Your charter includes the ranger arrangement.
