Komodo is not an Open Water playground — the northern sites demand Advanced Open Water and around 50 logged dives, and honest operators say so before they take your deposit. A dive liveaboard gives you what a day boat cannot: the site rotation. Expect roughly 6–8 dives on a 3D2N, 10–12 on a 4D3N and 16–20 on a 6D5N, with nitrox available on most deluxe and luxury vessels. The best window is April to November for the north and central park; the southern sites, including Cannibal Rock, are a December–March proposition.

Why the north is different
Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are submerged pinnacles in open water. The current does not merely drift you along the reef; it accelerates over the structure, which is why negative entries and reef hooks are normal there and why guides brief for downcurrent. This is genuinely excellent diving and genuinely unforgiving of poor buoyancy. If you have fewer than about fifty logged dives, dive the central park first — Batu Bolong, Siaba, Tatawa and Manta Point — and come back for the north.

Add a mandatory no-fly interval: leave at least 18–24 hours between your last dive and the DPS flight, and plan your last dive day accordingly. We build this into the itinerary rather than leaving it to you to discover.
What should a dive boat carry?
At minimum: at least one high-pressure compressor, and on any serious dive charter, two — compressor redundancy is what stands between a mechanical fault and a cancelled dive day. Emergency oxygen. A stocked first-aid kit. Lifejackets for every passenger, lifebuoys, navigation lights and fire extinguishers, with valid seaworthiness certification and a licensed captain and engineer. Certified dive professionals with a sensible guide-to-diver ratio, which in Komodo currents means no more than four divers per guide. Nitrox is common on deluxe and luxury vessels and worth having on a 10–12 dive itinerary. Ask for the specification sheet; we send it unprompted.

Note that some operators sell bundled route tickets — around IDR 650,000 for the Komodo Island and Padar route, roughly IDR 900,000 for Rinca — which is why two quotes for the same trip can look very different. We itemise ours.
What about non-diving partners?
Komodo handles mixed groups better than most destinations. Manta Point is one of the few world-class manta sites where snorkellers get the same show as divers, at 5–18 metres with a gentle drift. Pink Beach, Siaba and Taka Makassar are all excellent from the surface, and the land highlights — Padar at dawn, the dragon trek, Kalong at dusk — belong to everyone. Non-divers pay a reduced rate on most dive charters.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum certification and dive count?
Open Water is enough for the central park. For Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, the Cauldron and Golden Passage we want Advanced Open Water and around fifty logged dives, with recent experience. A refresher dive at Siaba on day one is standard if you have been out of the water for a while.
Is dive insurance required?
We require proof of diving insurance covering your planned depths. Komodo is remote and evacuation is expensive; this is not a formality.
What water temperature and wetsuit?
Broadly 26–29°C in the north and centre, with noticeably colder thermoclines in the south around Nusa Kode where 20–24°C is common. A 3 mm suit covers most of the park; bring 5 mm if you are diving south or doing four dives a day.
What does nitrox cost and do I need it?
It is quoted per fill or as a trip package and requires certification. On a 10–12 dive itinerary with repetitive multi-level profiles, it meaningfully extends your bottom time and reduces fatigue. On a 6–8 dive trip it is optional.
How strong are the currents really?
Strong enough that dive planning revolves around tides rather than schedules. Guides dive Batu Bolong at slack, brief negative entries in the north, and carry SMBs. Follow the briefing and Komodo is exhilarating; ignore it and it is not.
Can I learn to dive in Komodo?
You can certify at the beginner-friendly central sites, but Komodo is a better second destination than a first. If you want to learn, do it in calm water and save the pinnacles for when your buoyancy is automatic.
Can I dive and see the dragons on the same trip?
Yes — every dive itinerary includes the ranger-escorted trek at Loh Liang or Loh Buaya, and the surface interval is exactly when it happens.
When are manta sightings best?
Mantas are present year-round. Encounter rates at Manta Point, Karang Makassar and Mawan peak roughly December–March in plankton-rich water, with strong sightings continuing through April–June. Southern Manta Alley is a December–March site. No operator can guarantee an encounter, and any that does is guessing.
