There are three genuinely different products here, and confusing them is how weddings go wrong at sea. A proposal cruise needs one perfect private moment and a crew that can keep a secret. An elopement or symbolic ceremony needs a styled deck, a celebrant and space for a handful of guests. A pre-wedding photoshoot needs light, tide and a second boat for the drone and the wide frames. All three run on private charter — from roughly IDR 15–25 million per day for a standard phinisi, IDR 25–40 million deluxe, and IDR 40–70 million and above for luxury vessels, with a two- to three-night minimum.
Where and when does Komodo look its best?
Every location in the park has one hour when it works and twenty-three when it does not. This table is the planning document we build every shoot around.

What can the boat itself do?
More than most couples expect. On a private charter the vessel becomes the venue: the sun deck takes the ceremony, the saloon takes the dinner, and the master suite becomes the getting-ready room. We arrange deck styling with fresh flowers and fabric, a cake from Labuan Bajo, a sound system for the walk and the first dance, and — for proposals — a crew choreography so the deck is cleared, the champagne is chilled and the camera is already in position without a word being said to the wrong person.
What we cannot do is control the wind. Deck styling in an afternoon breeze needs weight and anchoring, and any planner who promises loose petals and floating fabric at anchor has not worked a Komodo afternoon.
Photography logistics
Serious pre-wedding shoots use a second tender, and often a second small boat, for two reasons: the wide shot needs the main vessel in frame under sail, and the photographer needs to move independently of the couple. We build that into the quote rather than surprising you with it.
Drone use inside Komodo National Park is regulated and may require permission depending on the location and the commercial nature of the shoot. Rules change; we check current requirements with the park authority for your specific dates and locations before you fly anything. Never over wildlife, rangers or other visitors.

The legal question, answered plainly
A ceremony on a boat in Komodo is a symbolic ceremony. We arrange the celebrant, the vows, the styling and the day. We do not arrange the legal marriage: marriage in Indonesia is administered through religious and civil channels with documentation requirements that vary by nationality and faith, and most international couples complete the legal formalities at home and come here for the ceremony that matters to them. Any operator telling you a boat ceremony is automatically legally binding is not being straight with you — ask them for the registration route in writing and watch what happens.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month?
May, June, September and October. Dry conditions, calm water, and slightly softer light than the hard midsummer sun. July and August are excellent but busiest. Avoid January and February — rain, rough seas and unreliable tender work.
How dependent is the sandbank on tide?
Completely. Taka Makassar is a shifting sandbar that submerges at high water. We check the tide tables for your dates before we build the schedule, and if the tide does not cooperate we move the shoot to another location rather than sailing you to an empty patch of sea.
What is the rain plan?
Move the ceremony under the deck awning or into the saloon, shift the shoot to the following morning if you have a multi-night charter — which is one of the strongest arguments for booking three nights rather than one day. Komodo rain in shoulder season usually passes within the hour.
Can I climb Padar in a wedding dress?
Not up the stairway, no. The standard solution: climb in shorts and trainers with the dress carried in a garment bag, change at the top behind a hand-held screen, shoot, change back for the descent. Every experienced Komodo photographer works this way.
Can we bring hair and makeup?
Yes, and we recommend it. Artists travel from Labuan Bajo or Bali and work on board. Book the cabin with the best natural light — usually the master suite — and allow more time than you would on land, because humidity is real.
How do you keep a proposal secret?
We brief the crew, not the couple. Everything — ring storage in the ship’s safe, the moment the deck is cleared, where the photographer positions, when the champagne appears — is arranged with one contact only, and the crew are practised at this. Ring safety at sea deserves genuine care: it stays in the safe until the moment.
Can guests who do not sail still attend?
Yes. Labuan Bajo has good hotels ten minutes from the harbour, and day guests can join for the ceremony and dinner and return in the evening on a tender or speedboat.
How far ahead should we book?
Six to twelve months for a wedding with guests, three to six for an elopement or shoot. Specific vessels for specific dates are the constraint, not availability in general — and a daily park visitor quota operates during peak season.
