Christmas and New Year in Komodo is peak demand colliding with the wet season. Boats sell out months ahead at premium rates and with minimum-night rules, while December sits inside the December–March rainy window. The upside is real: manta encounter rates peak in exactly these months. Here is the honest trade-off and the booking clock.
What is the weather actually like at New Year?
December is a transitional month that leans wet. The dry sailing window runs April to November, with June to September the settled peak; the rainy season runs roughly December to March, with January and February typically wettest and roughest — especially on exposed southern and open-water routes.
In practice, a late-December trip usually means: warm water, green hills rather than burnt gold, intermittent squalls rather than all-day rain, and a sea state that ranges from flat to genuinely lumpy depending on the week. Sheltered central-park legs stay comfortable more often than not. Long open crossings and southern routes are the ones that get modified.

What is the booking timeline for 24 December to 3 January?

Two structural things happen at the holidays that do not apply the rest of the year. Minimum-night rules: many boats will not sell a 2D1N over New Year, requiring 3D2N or 4D3N. And deposits are larger and less flexible — often 50% rather than 30%, with tighter cancellation windows, because the operator cannot resell a New Year cabin in December.

Why is December actually good for mantas?
This is the compensation for the weather, and it is not a consolation prize. Manta rays are present in Komodo year-round, but encounter rates at Manta Point / Karang Makassar and Mawan peak roughly December to March when plankton-rich water draws them to the cleaning stations, and stay strong through April to June. Southern Manta Alley is essentially a December-to-March proposition, weather allowing.

Dragons are unaffected — ranger-escorted treks at Loh Liang and Loh Buaya run year-round, with muddier trails and animals ranging more widely in the wet.
What does the holiday premium cost you?
Expect New Year departures to price meaningfully above the same boat in November or February. There is no fixed multiplier — it varies by vessel and by how early you book — but the pattern is consistent: the premium is largest on the best boats and smallest on budget inventory, because demand concentrates at the top.

Which alternative dates give 80% of the experience?
Three windows, in order of how much we recommend them:
- Early to mid December (1–18 Dec). Before the holiday surge, still inside the manta build-up, with shoulder-season pricing and far better boat availability. The best-value trip of the wet season.
- Mid to late January. Post-holiday collapse in demand, peak manta season, lowest prices of the year. You accept the wettest weeks and a route built for them.
- Late October to mid November. Dry-season conditions, thinning crowds, manta numbers beginning to build. If you can move your holiday rather than your expectations, this is the strongest option of all.
What is New Year actually like on board?
Quieter and better than most people expect. A boat with fourteen guests at anchor in a sheltered bay on 31 December is a genuinely memorable place: a longer dinner than usual, usually a barbecue on deck, the crew joining in, and no crowd, no queue and no taxi home.
Two honest notes. First, fireworks are not appropriate in a national park — wildlife disturbance rules apply, and any operator setting off pyrotechnics near a flying-fox colony or a nesting site is behaving badly. Expect lanterns, music and a good dinner rather than a display. Second, alcohol policies vary; most boats permit it and many allow BYO, but confirm before you board.
