Komodo Island is 3–4 hours from Labuan Bajo by phinisi and 1.5–2 hours by speedboat; Gili Lawa is 3.5–5 hours and 2–2.5 hours respectively. Once you subtract sailing time from daylight, the arithmetic settles every itinerary argument — and explains why a one-day trip cannot cover the park.
What are the actual sailing times from Labuan Bajo?
These are the working cruising times our captains plan around. A traditional phinisi moves at a modest, comfortable speed; a speedboat runs 25–35 knots. The difference reshapes what is possible.

Note that these are one-way times from the harbour, not between sites. A route that hops Padar to Pink Beach to Loh Liang covers shorter legs than the harbour figures suggest — which is exactly why overnight boats can string together stops a day trip cannot.
Can you visit Padar and Komodo Island in one day?
By speedboat, technically yes — and it is a long, hard day. Padar is 1–1.5 hours out, Komodo Island 1.5–2 hours, and the leg between them adds more. A dawn departure for the Padar sunrise, the ridge climb, then Pink Beach, then Loh Liang for the dragon trek, then Manta Point, then home, is roughly five to six hours of boat time inside a fourteen-hour day.
By phinisi, no. Komodo Island alone is 3–4 hours each way. A phinisi day trip realistically covers the near cluster: Kelor, Kanawa, Rinca, and perhaps Manjarite.
The honest version of the one-day question is: which two or three sites do you want to do properly, rather than which six can you technically touch. Most one-day guests are better served by Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point — three genuinely different experiences within a manageable radius, which is exactly how our Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point day package is built.

The classic 3D2N pattern runs: Day 1 Labuan Bajo to Kelor to Manjarite snorkelling to Kalong Island sunset; Day 2 Padar sunrise hike to Pink Beach to the Komodo Island ranger trek; Day 3 Manta Point to Taka Makassar to Kanawa or Siaba turtle spot and back. Why does the itinerary order change?
Because three constraints outrank convenience, and no operator controls any of them.
Tide. Taka Makassar is a sandbank — it exists at low tide and disappears at high. Manta feeding depends on current pushing plankton over the cleaning stations, so the Karang Makassar stop moves to hit the right water rather than the printed hour. Batu Bolong is usually dived at slack.
Current. Komodo sits between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean, and tidal exchange funnels through the channels. Some passages are transited at specific times or not at all.
Park slots. A daily visitor quota administered through the park’s booking system, reported as applying from April 2026, allocates landings. Boats with confirmed slots arrive on schedule; boats without them get reordered.
So a good itinerary is published as a sample route with the order subject to tide, weather and park scheduling — and the captain says so at the Day 1 briefing rather than after the fact. An operator who guarantees an exact hour-by-hour sequence weeks in advance either does not understand the park or is not being straight with you.
How do you spot an impossible itinerary?
Take the operator’s schedule and add up the sailing legs against the times printed on it. Three patterns give it away:
- Gili Lawa on a 3D2N phinisi trip that also does Padar sunrise and Loh Liang. Gili Lawa is 3.5–5 hours from the harbour. The maths usually does not survive.
- Six or more landings in a single speedboat day. Each stop costs 45–90 minutes on top of transit. Six stops plus five hours of running is not a day, it is a queue.
- Southern sites in July, or northern sites promised in January. Seasonal exposure decides accessibility — see the month-by-month guide.
Ask one question and the answer tells you everything: “What time do we leave each anchorage, and how long is each leg?” An operator who has actually run the route answers immediately.
How far is Komodo from Bali?
Far enough that you fly. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is a 1 hour 10–20 minute non-stop flight served by Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia, with fares commonly in the USD 60–150 one-way band. There is a multi-day ferry and overland route via Lombok, Sumbawa and western Flores, but it consumes two to three days each way.
The park itself starts from Labuan Bajo harbour — there is no boat that sails directly from Bali to Komodo on a normal holiday timeline. Anyone advertising a “Bali to Komodo cruise” is either flying you to Flores first or spending days at sea. Flight logistics are covered in our flights guide.

Do boats sail at night?

Can I island-hop independently between park islands?
No. There is no public transport between park islands. Access is by chartered or shared vessel, and dragon trails require compulsory ranger escort.
Which is better, phinisi or speedboat?
Speedboat for a single concentrated day and for anyone who wants minimum time at sea. Phinisi for multi-day trips, because you sleep on board at the anchorages rather than commuting from town.
