Komodo needs one flight from Bali and three to four days; Raja Ampat needs two-plus flights and an honest seven; Nusa Penida is a day trip from Bali with no boat nights at all. That transit arithmetic, not the marine life, decides which trip fits your holiday. Here is the comparison in full.
Which one should you pick?
- You have 4–5 days and want maximum variety — Komodo. Dragons, the Padar ridge, mantas and Pink Beach in one loop, reached by a single 1 hour 10–20 minute flight.
- You have 8–10 days and diving is the point — Raja Ampat. Nowhere in Indonesia matches its reef biodiversity, and nowhere costs more days to reach.
- You have one spare day in Bali — Nusa Penida. Cliffs, Kelingking, manta cleaning stations, back for dinner.
- You are travelling with non-divers — Komodo. Manta Point / Karang Makassar is snorkeller-friendly at 5–18 metres, so the whole group shares the headline encounter.
- You want land wildlife — only Komodo has dragons. There is no substitute.

What does Komodo give you for the days it costs?
Density. One flight, and within three days you have hiked a ridge above three bays, walked a dragon trail with a ranger, drifted over manta cleaning stations and swum off a pink-sand beach. No other Indonesian marine destination packs that much variety into that little transit.
The specifics: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is 1 hour 10–20 minutes non-stop on Garuda, Wings Air, Citilink or AirAsia, with fares commonly USD 60–150 one-way. From the harbour, Padar is 2–3 hours by phinisi, Komodo Island 3–4, Gili Lawa 3.5–5. Diving here is world-class but demanding: the north is a strong-current advanced region, while the central park has genuine beginner sites. Komodo suits mixed-ability groups better than its reputation suggests.
What does Raja Ampat give you for the days it costs?
The reef. Raja Ampat sits at the centre of the Coral Triangle and its species counts are the highest recorded anywhere. For a diver who has done a hundred dives elsewhere, it is the trip that recalibrates the standard.
The price is transit. From Bali you fly to Sorong via Jakarta or Makassar — typically an overnight or an early-morning connection — then transfer by boat to your liveaboard or resort. Realistically, two days of your holiday are consumed getting there and back before you have seen anything. That is why a seven-night minimum is honest and a four-night Raja Ampat trip is mostly airports.
Raja Ampat is also less suited to non-divers than Komodo. The snorkelling is superb, but there is no equivalent of the Padar hike or a dragon trek to fill the day for someone who does not want to be in the water.
What does Nusa Penida give you?
Efficiency. A fast boat from Sanur, a scooter or driver on the island, and the Kelingking cliff, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong in a single day. Divers get Manta Bay and Crystal Bay, with mola-mola appearing in the cooler months around July to October.
What it does not give you is remoteness. The cliff viewpoints are among the most photographed and most crowded places in Bali’s orbit, the roads are rough, and the day is heavily scheduled. It is a great day. It is not an expedition, and it should not be sold as one.
Can you combine two of the three?
Bali plus Komodo is the natural pairing and by far the most common. One additional flight leg, no route backtracking, and the two destinations complement each other rather than repeat — villa and culture in Bali, wilderness and sea in Flores. Combined packages typically run 5–7 days for a budget or standard combo (roughly USD 500–800 per person excluding international flights), 7–10 days mid-range with a deluxe phinisi (USD 900–1,500), and USD 1,800–3,000+ for luxury villa and superior phinisi programmes. Komodo plus Raja Ampat is possible but expensive in transit days: Labuan Bajo to Sorong requires backtracking through a hub, so budget two travel days between them and a total holiday of at least fourteen nights. It is a serious diving trip, not a casual add-on.

Is Nusa Penida a substitute for Komodo?
No. It is a day trip with cliffs and manta diving. Komodo is a multi-day national park with land wildlife found nowhere else. They answer different questions.
How many days do I need for Komodo?
Three to four is the honest minimum for a trip that does not feel rushed. Four unlocks Gili Lawa and the northern sites; three covers the central park properly.
