The short version: if you have 4–5 days, take a 4D3N sailing package from Bali; if you have two days and a tight budget, take a shared-cabin open trip; if you are travelling as a family or a group and want the boat to yourselves, book a private phinisi charter. How many days do I actually need for Komodo from Bali?
Four days is the honest minimum for a trip that includes Padar, a dragon trek and a manta site without feeling rushed. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is a short non-stop hop of roughly 1 hour 10–20 minutes, but the flight schedule — not the sailing — is what decides your itinerary. The morning departure is the only one that reliably lets you board a boat the same day; an afternoon arrival costs you a night in town. What do Komodo National Park fees add on top of the package price?
Park charges are government fees (PNBP) and are almost always quoted separately from the boat price, because they change independently of any operator. For a foreign visitor the entrance ticket is around IDR 250,000 per person per day, with a ranger or guide fee of roughly IDR 75,000, a harbour fee near IDR 25,000, and a diver surcharge of about IDR 25,000 per diver per day. Some operators instead sell bundled route tickets — Komodo Island plus Padar at around IDR 650,000 per foreign visitor — which is why two quotes for the same itinerary can look different.
One number you can safely ignore: the IDR 3.75 million “premium membership” fee proposed in 2022 was cancelled and never took effect. It still circulates in old blog posts and travel forums. When is the best time to sail?
April to October is the dry, settled season and the peak for visibility and calm crossings. Manta encounters at Manta Point are possible year-round but are most consistent from December to February, when plankton concentrations rise. January and February bring the strongest rain and the highest chance of a cancelled Padar landing; that is also when prices are lowest. Which package is cheapest?
A shared-cabin open trip is the cheapest overnight option, typically IDR 2.5–5 million per person for 3D2N depending on boat class. A one-day shared speedboat tour is cheaper still but does not include any northern sites.
Can I book a Komodo package from Bali without flying?
No practical option exists for most travellers. There is no scheduled fast-ferry route from Bali to Labuan Bajo, and the multi-day sailing route via Lombok and Sumbawa is a different product with different comfort expectations. Almost every “Komodo package from Bali” starts with the DPS–LBJ flight.
Is Komodo Island still open?
Yes. Both Komodo Island (Loh Liang) and Rinca (Loh Buaya) remain open to guided visitors. The rumoured full closure was never implemented. A ranger escort is compulsory on every trek.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to September and the Christmas–New Year window, six to twelve weeks ahead is sensible; the best cabins on the better boats go first. Outside those windows, two to four weeks is usually enough. A reported daily visitor quota administered through the SIORA system also makes early confirmation worthwhile.
