What are the three realistic budgets?
Below are three complete trips for a couple, each built on a 3D2N sailing plus one hotel night in Labuan Bajo. All figures are 2026–2027 market guideline bands, not fixed quotes; boat rates move with season, class and lead time, and park tariffs are set by the park authority.

Where does the boat money actually go?
The boat is 60–80% of most Komodo budgets, so this is where decisions matter. Three structures exist, and they price on completely different logic.
Open trip, shared cabin. You buy two berths on a scheduled departure alongside other guests. Market guideline for a 3D2N shared cabin is roughly IDR 2.5–5 million per person (about USD 170–340) depending on boat class. For a couple that is USD 340–680 for the sailing. This is the most cost-efficient way to see the park and the reason open trips dominate the market.
Shared or private speedboat day trip. A shared speedboat day runs roughly IDR 1.0–1.8 million per person (USD 70–125). A private speedboat day charter for the whole boat sits around IDR 8–15 million (USD 550–1,050) — which for two people is expensive per head but buys complete control over timing, and beating the fleet to Padar’s jetty is worth real money to photographers.
Whole-boat phinisi charter. Priced per day, not per person: standard boats roughly IDR 15–25 million per day (USD 1,000–1,700), deluxe IDR 25–40 million (USD 1,700–2,700), luxury and superior IDR 40–70 million-plus (USD 2,700–4,700+). Most charters require a two- to three-night minimum and include crew, meals and fuel inside the core park area, with park fees passed through at cost.
For two people, chartering is a deliberate luxury choice rather than a value one — you are buying privacy and pace, not seats. It makes far more financial sense from about eight guests up, as set out on our group and corporate charter page.
What do park fees add for a couple?
Foreign visitors pay approximately IDR 250,000 per person per day entrance, plus ranger, harbour and conservation components that bring the realistic all-in official budget to roughly IDR 300,000–400,000 per park day. For two people entering the park on two calendar days, that is roughly IDR 1.2–1.6 million, or USD 75–105 total. Divers add a small per-day surcharge on top.
Some operators file a bundled route ticket instead — around IDR 650,000 per foreign visitor for the Komodo Island and Padar route, or roughly IDR 900,000 for Rinca. The single supplement and the alcohol policy are the two that surprise people most often. Both are answerable in one message before you pay.
Where can you save without buying a bad boat?
There is a difference between spending less and buying risk. These five save money without touching safety:
- Travel in a shoulder month. April, May, October and November deliver most of peak-season conditions at meaningfully lower rates. See the month-by-month guide.
- Take a standard cabin on a good boat rather than a deluxe cabin on a weak one. On a two-night trip you are on deck almost all day anyway.
- Rent dive gear in Labuan Bajo instead of paying excess baggage to fly it.
- Book early enough to get the boat you want rather than the boat that has space. Late booking in peak season costs more and delivers less.
- Skip the extra flight leg. Fly DPS–LBJ direct rather than routing through Jakarta on a “cheaper” combination that costs a day.

Occasionally on unsold shared cabins in low season. In peak season the opposite happens — the good boats sell out and what remains is more expensive and less good.
